Cream the shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.
Add the molasses and egg, mixing well.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.
Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined.
Roll the dough into 1-inch balls.
Coat each ball in sugar, rolling to cover completely.
Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the edges are set and tops are cracked.
Cool on a wire rack.
